“John is a fantastic photographer that will capture every moment in perfect detail. We were amazed to see how much he actually got whilst never being in the way. All of our guests commented on how fantastic he was. His prices are dearer than a lot of photographers in the area but we would not hesitate to pay it again and again because of the quality you get. If you're looking for a photographer that will be pushy and controlling then John is not for you. He will keep you relaxed and at ease throughout.” John and ErinGray, Perth, Married at Meelup Beach.

We often look back at the photos and can feel ourselves back in those moments and reliving those emotions. John is truly a very gifted photographer and is passionate about his love for capturing beauty in life and people as they are naturally. He has a very down to earth personality and a lively spirit that shows his passion for life and love in what he does. He is also someone you can feel immediately comfortable with and at ease around. We could not have hoped to find a better photographer to capture our special day and we would definitely give him 5 stars and recommend him to everyone!” Melissa and Daryl Maddin, Perth, Married at Bunker Bay.

“We cant recommend Eternity Photography enough! From time of booking to picking up our photos John and his staff have been a pleasure to deal with. They were always happy to discuss things if I required some information and were very easily contacted. On the wedding day Sebastian and Annelize were very professional, but they also made the photo times really fun and relaxed. Our favourite shots are the natural, unplanned shots and the beautiful landscape shots Sebastian captured. The perspective of the second photographer was also a great addition because she captured some really great moments from another angle. Looking at the photos that night it felt like our wedding day all over again. Absolutely delighted!” Kate and Alan Napier, Perth, Married at Aravina Estate

WISE WINERY - EAGLE BAY, FUR BABY IN THE WEDDING PARTY

Fur Baby at wedding

There is nothing cuter than including your dog in your wedding party. Wise Winery in Eagle Bay is a lovely intimate wedding venue with insane views over the vineyards and ocean.

During the ceremony I took a moment to photograph Richard & Helen’s fur baby. I noticed he had been attracted to some birds swooping the grapevines and realised I could get the wedding in the background.

I knew I had to move fast but not so fast that I completely stack it in front of eighty people haha. Successfully negotiating the steps down, I could now compose a pic and capture the scene.

This is a pretty cool pic and I personally love it. I have received many wedding bookings recently on the back of this photo alone.

Seeing moments like this is exciting and fun, being able to capture them for people is incredibly rewarding.

WILLS DOMAIN - YALLINGUP, BE PRESENT AND ENJOY EVERY MOMENT ON YOUR WEDDING DAY

Groom at Wills Domain on his wedding day

Try to be present and enjoy every moment of your wedding day

Here are a couple of photos from a wedding at Wills Domain Winery in Yallingup. A fantastic wedding and a really awesome couple.

Their wedding pics are fantastic.

I was looking through some recently and I thought these two would be a great example of something I feel could really help you with on your wedding day.

The point I am highlighting is to be present and enjoying the moment at your wedding. Try not to be caught up discussing the next stage of your wedding day perfect because you may be missing out on wonderful moments with your friends and family or your husband or wife!

You can see in the photo of Tristan being congratulated by his friends and family he is present and looks excited and happy.

In the other photo, his wife Dawn looks excited and in the moment but Tristan looks preoccupied.

How can you make sure you are enjoying every moment at your wedding? Delegate tasks and have people in charge of organising certain parts of the day.

I am always big on being the time keeper at weddings. Before your wedding I have planned your timeline for you and I know that at this point I will do x, y and z. I am happy to be in the background capturing moments as they happen and I am just as happy to step in and direct large or small groups.

You do not want to be doing anything other than having a fantastic fun day and I strongly advise selecting family and friend support people and wedding suppliers who will go the extra mile to make your day easy and stress free.

CAVES HOUSE - YALLINGUP, TELLING A STORY WITH WEDDING SEQUENCE PHOTOS

My clients often do not get to see or remember everything at their wedding. Some can be overwhelmed by the occasion whilst others just don’t have eyes in the back of their heads.

The most common feedback I get is that my clients simply didn’t see first hand a lot of the cool stuff that just happens at weddings.

I’m not talking big moments like speeches. I’m talking moments of emotion, joy, happiness. Cute kids playing, acting up. Friends and family excitedly greeting one another before your ceremony. The laughter.

In search of moments like this I know that more than one photograph can really give the viewer a chance to relive that moment. A bit like video but way cooler.

You see when documentary wedding photography was becoming a thing in the 1930’s, we had photographers that stared shooting moments as they unfolded and they were labelled “sequences”. I have talked about this before in a previous post but wedding sequences are a big part of my style.

This is a simple example at a wedding at Caves House in Yallingup. The cutest little flower girl is milking the crowd big time and grandma and great grandma are taking the bait.

A great example of a moment the bride and groom simply did not see on their day as they are chatting to guests before family photos.

EIGHT WILLOWS RETREAT - MARGARET RIVER, FAVOURITE LOCATION

BRIDE AND GROOM AT EIGHT WILLOWS RETREAT

This is a favourite location on the property that I love to head to when photographing the bride and groom at Eight Willows Retreat in Margaret River.

The strand of gum trees are easily missed but if you time it right and get the light spot on it’s an incredible landscape scene.

The lovely subtle colours on the bark of the trees, each slightly different and some have a glow as the light wraps around them.

Behind the trees are some lovely mid green bushes that help the brides dress stand out, an important quality when photographing weddings.

This is one that I love to start by photographing further away for my clients who may like to get a wall artwork made. Some of my clients love how they are within a beautiful landscape scene, they feel they can enlarge this for their wall because there is more to the image than just them.

I must admit I’d feel the same but for those of my clients that are more than happy to have themselves larger on the wall I also move closer in and offer them the choice.

You can see how this would look by simply placing your hand across the top half of the photo. The bride and groom stand out even more.

WISE WINERY - EAGLE BAY, FLOWER GIRLS STEAL THE SHOW

Flower Girls Wise Winery Wedding

I love photographing kids, I do a heap of family portraits throughout the year and it gives me a chance to be a big kid, interacting with children is so much fun and they often surprise me with cool facts or intricate stories.

The two flower girls at this wedding at Wise Winery were full of beans and had proceeded to do cartwheels, chase one another and give the adults a fantastic show while the congratulations were taking place.

I captured some great spontaneous shots the the girls in action with the guests watching on but this photo really holds my interest.

This photo shows the girls slightly more subdued but still on a mission as they walk past the bride and groom. I love how Richard and Helen are equally in their own little world as they chat together, unaware of the girls passing by.

In the background the band plays but both sets of people seem detached from it.

This wedding was super chilled out. Richard and Helen were not wanting a ton of directed photos and they let me do my thing and capture the day.

I am sure that the family are also drawn to this photo, as the girls get older this will be a photo that will bring some smiles to faces which is what it is all about for me.

CAPE LODGE - YALLINGUP, WHY DO MY CLIENTS LOVE SPONTANEOUS WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY THE MOST?

Natural spontaneous wedding photography

This sequence of wedding photographs captures the emotion and excitement of the guests at Cape Lodge in Yallingup.

Documentary photographers have traditionally used sequences of photos to tell their stories. I use sequences to show the raw emotions at weddings. Whether it’s spontaneous laughter or shedding a tear.

This sequence starts with the excited parents sharing a joke while the bride and groom sign the wedding certificate.

I had a hunch that something might go down here and I wasn’t disappointed.

I doubt that Scott and Zoe would have even seen this happen as they were busy with the celebrant and the paperwork.

Whilst photographing the signing perfectly I also managed to get this wonderful sequence of spontaneous reactions. Two sets of parents sharing a joke and laughing together.

What a brilliant image to have in the family. These photographs bring a smile to my face every time I view them.

YALLINGUP - IPAD KISS, THE CUTEST LOVE STORY EVER!!!

Kissing at wedding

This is an amazing wedding photograph I took at a beach wedding in Yallingup.

I am so stoked that I captured this moment but it is the story behind the photograph that I would like to explain first.

There is no better way to explain than to share the quote from Jessica about this photograph.

“These two love birds only met 18 months ago and are now inseparable.

It just goes to show, at 80 years young… It is never too late to find your soulmate.’’

*Jessica, about her Grandfather.

Are these two people the coolest dudes ever? They look so cute together. I love what they are wearing, I really like the fact that he is holding onto his walking stick, hand on the wall and leaning in for a kiss.

They are totally connected with each other and just to top it off she is clutching her iPad. Just brilliant.

I saw this moment in the corner of my eye, I was facing the other way so I span around really quickly and grabbed this photograph.

It was over in an instant. I was so excited that I checked the screen to see what I had captured and I was so happy.

Later in the day I was chatting to Jessica and I learnt the story behind the photograph.

To think that I can go to a wedding and record important moments like this for people is a real gift and something that I love.

BRIDE GETTING READY PHOTOGRAPHS - WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO YOU?

BRIDE AND FATHER

I think that the majority of wedding photographers are pre occupied with fulfilling shot lists, this is often the very same type of list that you will see in a bridal magazine.

I have photographed weddings for twenty years and I started out shooting for a studio in Perth. They marketed themselves as candid and natural wedding photographers but to be honest it was all about fulfilling the shot list.

Photographing the dress is important but can working off a list remove the photographer from a creative mindset to a systematic approach to your wedding.

The problem with this conventional approach to wedding photography is that you have stopped looking for the real genuine moments that take place.

Would the bride prefer ten shots of her shoes with varying angles and composition or would she rather have one or two amazing shots of her shoes?

Probably the latter if she new the photographer would then have more time to photograph Mum overcome with emotion or her best friends excitement.

When I go to a brides house I get a feel for the energy and atmosphere. Has the morning been super chilled or have a few things gone pear shaped and it is a little tense. I adjust my approach to suit the mood.

I want to tell the story of what is happening and I start to collect photographs that combine and give you a record of what everything looked like but also how people were feeling at this part of your wedding story.

I have photographed thousands of weddings and I can anticipate when things may happen and I am prepared to capture those rare moments when people reveal their emotions.

What I include in each photograph is part of telling the story of that particular moment, composition is a major strength in my photography style.

Light adds the magic to a photograph. Knowing how to see beautiful light in seconds of walking into a house or hotel room is something that I have mastered over many years.

WHY I LOVE THIS PIC - JOHN RICE - ETERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY

This photograph is all about spontaneity.

Nicole is having some photos done with her amazing dress all laid out perfectly, the backdrop is fantastic and everything is set.

Next minute, bridesmaid banter from the on looking girls and Nicole erupts into laughter.

I personally love photos like this that show personality and fun.

MARGARET RIVER'S SECRET GARDEN - MARGARET RIVER, ANOTHER PHOTO I LOVE

MARGARET RIVER'S SECRET GARDEN WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

WHY I LOVE THIS PIC - JOHN RICE - ETERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY

Whilst photographing weddings in a story telling style, I need to have my eye open for some of the more subtle moments that occur.

I have always felt and sensed emotion at weddings, whether it's Mum or Dad, the bride and groom or a good friend reading some words at your ceremony.

Family is very important to me, it's something I value highly. So when I see friends or family showing their feeling for one another it really resonates with me.

I think this gives me an ability to sense and predict these moments.

In this photograph I love this little exchange of excitement between Sebastian & Cleo.

They have just concluded their vowels and their expressions say, "we've done it!!"

A more subtle moment but a precious one for them to look back on and enjoy.

WHY I LOVE THIS PIC - JOHN RICE - ETERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY

Sometimes you are given a little gift, a split second reaction that shows all the emotion and excitement felt.

As Damian & Michelle are walking out of the church, Damian pauses to kiss his beautiful bride on the cheek.

This is her reaction.

I love the expression on her face. After feeling a few nerves during the ceremony it looks like Michelle is ready to let her hair down and enjoy her day.

WHY I LOVE THIS PIC - JOHN RICE - ETERNITY PHOTOGRAPHY

This photograph was taken as the bridal party walked to another location during the bridal shoot.

I look for little moments like this throughout the day, when the guard is down and people are not expecting to be photographed.

It leads to wonderful natural and genuine expressions.

In this photo, Cleo aka "the bride" takes a moment to reflect and bask in the beautiful sunshine and happy vibes as she walks through the amazing gardens.
