It was so nice to meet Kaydee at Laurance Cellar she was so welcoming and gave me the lowdown of where the hot photo spots were. All the staff from the restaurant to the gardeners whizzing around on their mowers were just so friendly and helpful.  Here is the first of two sets of pics that I took.

Wedding Photography in Margaret River

I visited the Leeuwin Estate, one of the founding wineries of the now famous Margaret River district to meet up with the lovely Rachael, who manages the weddings and functions.  Driving in through the estate along a windy lane past the endless vineyards it was clear why this is a highly sought after destination to celebrate your wedding day.  I was here to scope out some great locations for photography and to pinpoint where I will be creating memorable natural images for my clients.

By the time I had entered the restaurant my head was buzzing with ideas for great images. The view from the balcony is made for either relaxing with a glass of wine or for someone like myself, getting very excited with my camera. The lawned area that meets a forrest of beautifully straight and very tall gum trees has a tranquil beauty that I love. I shot here in the late afternoon at a time that bridal shots would take place. The light is so soft and warm, perfect for portrait photography. Added to this, the soft natural colours of the forrest and vineyard, everything you need to create the style of natural photographs that have a subtlety which is very powerful.

I have met a lot of really genuine and nice people so far in Margaret River and Rachael is certainly one of them. Firstly she loved my images which was very cool and also during a hectic part of the day she took time to chat and help me find my feet. She told me where the best locations were on the estate which really helped. I have to say that with the stunning views, amazing food on show and great wine this really is a top spot to work and all the staff seemed to be well aware of that.

I will certainly be popping in again to say hi and taking some more shots. I am very excited about the images that I will be able to capture here. My style is very creative, natural and I love images with people within a landscape. For a bride and groom the best news is that you do not have to walk far to get a great range of images that will compliment each other beautifully. I think that is important and a great benefit to the Leeuwin Estate, in a relatively short space of time you can have some memorable wedding photographs and be back celebrating with your guests.

Wow, what a wonderful day I had with this beautiful couple. When you are so positive and happy everything seems to just slot into place and that is exactly what happened. I really enjoyed building a story with my photographs and capturing the feeling of love and celebration. The wedding ceremony was at Matilda Bay amongst those gorgeous trees and river views. We had so much fun with the bridal party and family as they all hung around for photos and it was clearly evident from getting to know their parents where Dan and Meagan have got their positive outlook on life. Later on we headed over to the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club and we got some really fun images. Dan is flying supply Chinook helicopters in Afghanistan so he wanted some funny shots with the old canon at the Yacht club. I really love the image on the jetty with all the beautiful colours in the water, lets just say Meagan was pretty excited when I showed her the back of my camera.

When Jacinta and Brent approached Eternity back in October they said that they were after something that looked natural and captured their connection in a genuine way. As a photographer that’s exactly what we try to do, we work, we play, we explore, we create moments in which we can bring out the genuine emotion that you feel for each other and compress it all into a single frame. Blessed with an amazing sunset Jacinta and Brent’s portrait session was great and we really look forward to your wedding in October 2011.

From the moment go I knew there was going to be something special about Hugh and Anna’s wedding but little did I know it would totally exceed all my expectations. These two had such an amazing connection. They seemed like old friends that have been catapulted into a child like state, photographing their wedding was just such a joy.

I think I captured the way that everyone embraced the celebration and the softer romantic side of Han and Kim that I started to understand during our engagement session and various meetings. This is a more subtle side of them that can be missed.

Kim and Han’s wedding reception was at the Broadwater Pagoda hotel in Perth. We had discussed in our planning meeting the idea of shots on the bridge over the freeway. I wanted to play with some natural source lighting and on the bridge we found that we could use the lighting from the freeway to create something unique. This image has a cinematic quality and it was one of those moments as a photographer that I knew this would be a special image. I love it!

Tim and Kandese got married on the 24th Of April 2010. It was a beautiful sunny day which is pretty much standard procedure for weddings in Perth. Everyone was up for having a great time and there was plenty of jokes flying around to keep any nerves away. The most stressful time was when Tim and the boys were struggling with fixing their ties but other than that it was all very relaxed. Kandese was really up for a laugh and after meeting her Dad Rob, I had a clear idea of where the humour genes were coming from.

The girls had the music cranked up as they pampered away and helped Kandese with her dress, I think she was up for a dance which made the bridesmaids task a little bit more of a challenge. One of the bridesmaids had travelled in from the bush where her and her partner run a farm, I love to talk to people from the country as they have so many great stories to tell.

Tying the dress is a tough task for Mum and the bridesmaids as they know that this a “wedding moment” that must go smoothly, there is plenty of anxious laughing. This is one of those times that I am working like a madman to capture the complete spectrum of emotions and I find when people are really concentrating they drop their guard a little and reveal how they feel.

I love to find my favourite quality of light that is so good for portraits, it delivers beautiful soft skin tones and adds a subtle depth as well. Every house has it and it is where I do my creative work. While I am photographing Kandese I can hear the “worker bridesmaids” carrying bags and arranging food, she is very lucky to have such cool friends who know how to make the day easy. I am very happy that my clients are always happy chilled out people and because they are like that their friends are usually cool cats too.

I really like this church in Vic Park, it has a really bright and warm atmosphere. Tim was there and was holding it together really well, I grabbed some portraits of him with the boys and then it was time head out to photograph Kandese arriving.

The ceremony is where the wedding photojournalism style that I love comes into play. There is no direction here and it my ability to anticipate and capture emotions and feelings that will create a powerful collection of photographs that tell stories.  I want to capture laughter, tears and love.

I think I need to get better at keeping the number of photographs down for my blogs. Trouble is I do feel very emotionally attached to them because they remind me of the people and day that we all spent together. I enjoy them so much that each wedding is another opportunity to create something even better, to tell stories and make beautiful pictures. The wedding day goes so fast that afterwards it is all about stories and photographs or videos that can help us all remember what happened. Editing the wedding and creating albums brings it all back to me. I’ll leave you with the rest of the day, we cruised into a sneaky little city location that I found. I love to go and scope out new spots. After the city we headed to AQWA wedding function centre in Hillary’s. It’s a really great location for photos with amazing views and the added bonus of a couple of “SHARK!” shots in the aquarium. It’s okay we don’t swim with them.
